BIOGRAPHY
At the beginning of the sixties, when he started his formal piano studies,
brazilian composer Lelo Nazario (born at the city of São Paulo in 1956)
couldn't imagine that the friends and musicians who used to come to his
house - all of them deep afficcionados of jazz and the new born bossa nova
- would be the main influence in his upcoming musical career. His older
brother, drummer and percussionist Zé Eduardo Nazario had turned into a
professional musician at a very young age, and was already known at the
musical circles of then as the creator of a drumbeat called "Jequibau",
a 5/4 rhythm bossa nova written by composer Mario Albanese. Lelo quickly
took advantage of all these extremely rich relationships, carefully storing
all kinds of musical (and cultural) informations.
The passion for contemporary classical music comes from this same period
of time, as many new and innovative tendencies were popping up in the USA
and Europe, leaded by legendary composers such as Stockhausen, Messiaen,
Berio and Cage, as well as Brazilians Marlos Nobre and Almeida Prado, among
others. This new music would also come to influence his jazz compositions,
that would always bring some atonal or polytonal element. Looking this way,
Lelo may be easily considered a pioneer Third Stream (term coined by composer
Gunther Schuller to describe a cross between classical and popular, jazz
works) representative in Brazil.
During his teens, Lelo formed with his brother a group called MALIKA, mixing
afro-brazilian/south american music with contemporary jazz. The saxophone
player was Hector Costita, known by his work with Lalo Schifrin's big band,
Sergio Mendes and Gato Barbieri. They played a number of concerts and TV
specials, until Zé Eduardo was invited to join Hermeto Pascoal's band, together
with bass player Zeca Assumpção. It wouldn't take much time till Lelo (17
years old, then) was also invited to take part, completing the nucleus that
would eventually evolve into Grupo Um. With Hermeto, they travelled all
around the country, playing at theaters, radios, TVs and universities.
The band had a steady foundation (piano, bass and drums) and Hermeto used
to call different musicians (mainly sax and guitar players) to each presentation.
When asked to play at Rio de Janeiro's Modern Art Museum, he invited some
local musicians to join the band. Among them were Mauro Senise and Raul
Mascarenhas (saxophones and flutes), Marcio Montarroyos (trumpet and fluegelhorn)
and Toninho Horta (guitar). A big empathy quickly grew up between the rhythmic
session and the soloists, consolidating some musical partnerships that would
soon be reformulated at the future Grupo Um incarnations. In fact, their
first line-up included another long time friend (and also Hermeto's alumnus),
saxophone player Roberto Sion (future Pau Brasil founder member), who took
part at their earliest recorded sessions.
As we can see, Hermeto Pascoal's band, during his stay in São Paulo, was
one of the main musical creative nucleus of the early 70's, spreading a
new way of thinking about the music: freer, without formal barriers and
with extremely creative results. Arising from this rich background, Grupo
Um began to play in a more frequent way from 1976 on, till Senise replaces
Sion at the saxophone duties, in 1978. At the following year the band was
noticed by singer and composer Marlui Miranda, who invited them for a joint
season of concerts. As they already had all the studio recorded material
necessary for a first album, they decided to release it during their stay
with Marlui.
So, Marcha
Sobre a Cidade (March Over the City) was born, in a very limited
original edition (which is quite rare nowadays), a fully independent effort,
paid by the musicians themselves - the first independent instrumental LP
to be released in Brazil, a true milestone in both musical and commercial
aspects. The initial press was quickly sold out, so the album was repressed
by the Lira Paulistana label, which, besides producing and distributing
these promising new instrumental groups, also maintained a small theater
that soon became the main reference for new music development during the
decades of 1970 and 1980 in São Paulo. A lot of innovative new bands growed
up playing there, like Pé Ante Pé, the Divina Increnca trio and composer
Arrigo Barnabé, among dozens of others.
Lelo still fronted Grupo Um in their following albuns: "Reflexões Sobre
a Crise do Desejo" ("Reflections About the Crisis of Desire"), from 1981,
and "A Flor de Plástico Incinerada" ("The Incinerated Plastic Flower"),
from 1983. Both works show the constant evolution of their sound, and were
widely regarded as innovative at the brazilian contemporary music scene.
Some new members joined in: Rodolfo Stroeter substituted Zeca Assumpção
at the bass, when he moved to Rio de Janeiro; Teco Cardoso replaced Mauro
Senise at the saxes and flutes, and german born musician Felix Wagner also
got on board, playing alto clarinet and marimba. With this new formation
the group toured and played in a lot of European countries, reaching a quite
significant international recognition. Their first album was even released
in France by a local label. Today, only "Marcha Sobre a Cidade" was already
released in CD, in 2002, in a limited quantity (1000 copies) issue pressed
by the Editio Princeps label in Rio de Janeiro, with 20 minutes of extra
material from the previous band incarnation, still with sax player Roberto
Sion. "Reflexões Sobre a Crise do Desejo" is scheduled for release in 2004
by the same label, also containing extra material.
In parallel to his band's work at the 80's, Lelo Nazario started to develop
his own solo material as erudite composer, pianist and arranger, also working
in the advertisement soundtracks and jingles field (where he achieved a
huge success, with awarded films at the Cannes and New York festivals).
From that time are his first solo albums: "Lagrima / Sursolide Suite" ("Tear
/ Sursolide Suite") and "Discurso aos Objetos" ("Speech to Objects"), both
bringing avant-garde electroacoustic compositions, with magnetic tape manipulations
and lots of experimentation.

Trying to fuse contemporary music with avant-garde jazz, Lelo also took
part in one of the most innovative combos of the early 80's: the Symmetric
Ensemble, originally composed of two pianos (Lelo and Felix Wagner) and
two contrabasses (Stroeter and Assumpção). The group toured Europe as a
trio (Zeca Assumpção was busy, on tour with Egberto Gismonti), recording
lots of programs to French and German state radios and playing a last and
memorable gig at the famous "Espace Cardin", in Paris.
In 1986 Lelo created a series of compositions revisiting somewhat Grupo
Um's musical style, and invited friends from the Pau Brasil group (among
others) to record them. The resulting album, "Se…" ("If…"), released in
1989 only (and edited in CD in 2004 by Editio Princeps, also with extra
material), quickly became another Brazilian contemporary instrumental music
landmark, not only due to the outstanding compositions but also the all-star
team of musicians involved in the recording. Bass player Rodolfo Stroeter
was Pau Brasil's leader, and all musicians were then recognized as the best
players around at each respective instrument: sax player Teco Cardoso, drummer
Nenê (another Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti disciple), guitarist
Paulo Bellinati and pianist Nelson Ayres. Having already recorded three
successful albums ("Pau Brasil", "Pindorama" and "Cenas Brasileiras"), the
group had a frequent presence at the European stages, and was catching more
and more attention from producers and jazzmen in general around all Europe.
During one of these tours they got an invitation from the well respected
Duo Assad (producers from GHA Records, in Brussels), to record the album
"Lá Vem a Tribo" ("Here Comes the Tribe"), in 1989.
Lelo was invited to join the band shortly before the recording sessions,
replacing original pianist Nelson Ayres, and traveled with them for lots
of gigs at the USA and Europe. He also took part in the forthcoming albuns
"Metrópolis Tropical" (1991), a French production distributed in Europe
only, and "Babel" (1996), released by the Blue Jackel label, in New York.
This album received some important awards in Brazil (like the Sharp Prize),
and even got a Grammy indication for best latin jazz album. Still with Pau
Brasil, Lelo Nazário also recorded "Pau Brasil & Hermeto Pascoal", an incredible
live recording released by the Tom Brasil label, in São Paulo, and composed
the "Ópera dos 500" ("500's Opera"), hired by the Brazilian government for
America's 500th discovery anniversary festivities, in 1992.

At the late nineties, in his own musical studio (Utopia), Lelo produces
his 4th solo album, "Simples" ("Simple"), containing a set of compositions
dedicated to musicians he admire, like Clare Fischer, Roger Kellaway, Denny
Zeitlin, Zeca Assumpção and Daniel Goyonne, with Teco Cardoso, Marlui Miranda
and drummer Peter Erskine as a guest in one track. Also with Marlui he keeps
on developing cinema and ballet scores, winning the first prize at Brasília's
Cinema Festival for the movie "Hans Staden".
In his more recent projects, Lelo joined forces with his brother Zé Eduardo
again, and formed Duo Nazario, making use of different electronic keyboards
and pre-recorded sounds as a counterpoint to the acoustic timbres of the
diverse percussion instruments. The Duo was hired by the São Paulo's Symphony
Band to write a couple of compositions ("Limite" and "Aurora"), which got
public performances at the 10th Brazilian Contemporary Music Biennial (1994),
in Rio de Janeiro, and at the 8th World Association for Symphonic Bands
and Ensembles (1997), in Austria. For a special show during the 1998's Zildjian
Day (event hosted by the American cymbal factory), with the presence of
percussionist Trilok Gurtu, the Duo invited guitarist Felipe Avila to play
his synth-guitar. This whole presentation was released in the following
year in a small press CD edition, under the name of Percussônica. Focused
at contemporary jazz and Brazilian music, the compositions explore the many
variations and combinations between the acoustic percussion instruments
and the synthesized percussive sounds from both guitars and keyboards, transforming
the whole band in a big percussion jazz ensemble. More shows were recorded,
and a new Percussônica CD, "Hoje" ("Today"), has been
released in 2004, bringing material from the original recording plus new
songs recorded in these more recent concerts.
